Back on 2003, I began working through my recovery as a member of Al-Anon, a 12 step group for friends and family of problem drinkers. I found myself attending 2-3 meetings a week at a great group in Lewisville, Texas. It was here that I first worked the steps with a sponsor, and really faced myself in a mirror.
Miss Jo was an elderly woman with over 30 years in the program. I give thanks for her today, on All Saint’s Day, for she truly was a saint. She was my sponsor’s sponsor and my recovery continues to be shaped by Miss Jo’s work with my sponsor – which was passed on to me.
Miss Jo tended to be quiet in meetings – she had nothing to prove and tons of lived experiences to share with us as we sought strength and hope from the program. It only took a week for me to realize that she was a woman I needed to pay attention to. I never dreamed back then that I could ever find peace and serenity in the middle of a shitstorm – like she had.
But here I am. Finally at peace and finally serene – when I take the time to practice recovery.
Thank you Miss Jo. Someday, on the other side, I hope to experience you chair a meeting once more and soak in your wisdom and care. Until then, I will keep coming back.
